Benefits & How It Works

Hydraulic action and gravity accelerate heavier particles down to the debris reservoir, where they are easily flushed away

Patented Conical Screen

A large-surface-area conical filter screen captures debris efficiently, delivering less than 1 PSI of pressure loss when clean and minimizing operating costs.

Hydraulic Cleaning Action

Dirty water enters the bottom inlet and flows up through the riser pipe. Hydraulic action and gravity drive heavier particles down into the large debris reservoir.

Easy Flush

Accumulated particles are flushed from the strainer reservoir via the 1.5" NPT flush port, while clean water exits through the outlet at the top of the housing.

Stainless Steel Construction

High-quality Type 304 stainless steel housing (Type 316 optional) with Type 316 SS screen mesh for durable, corrosion-resistant performance.

Space-Saving Profile

A streamlined, space-saving design with an easily removable filter lid simplifies installation and screen maintenance.

Completely Customizable

Configurable from 2" to 14" with NPT, grooved or flanged connections, clamp or bolted lids, and a range of mesh and gasket options.

Optional Add-Ons

Any Thompson Strainer can be outfitted for enhanced, automated operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Thompson Strainer work?
Dirty water enters the inlet at the bottom of the housing and flows up through the riser pipe assembly. Hydraulic action and gravity accelerate heavier particles down to the bottom debris reservoir, where they are flushed out via the 1.5" port. Clean water then exits through the outlet port at the top of the housing.
What sizes and flow rates are available?
Standard models range from the MLS-2 (2", 100 GPM) up to the MLS-14 (14", 4000 GPM). Recommended flow varies depending on solids loading and screen sizing, and multiple strainers can be manifolded together for higher flow rates.
What materials are used in construction?
The housing and internal piping are Type 304 stainless steel (Type 316 optional), screen support frames are Type 304 SS, and the screen mesh is Type 316 SS as standard. Gaskets are EPDM by default, with VITON and BUNA available by special order.
What screen mesh options are available?
Standard mesh ranges from 16 mesh (1003 micron) to 200 mesh (74 micron). Heavy-duty mesh options (24x110, 30x150, 40x200, 50x250) and perforated screens are also available, and are recommended for the finer 120, 150 and 200 mesh sizes.
Can the strainer be automated?
Yes. Any Thompson Strainer can be outfitted with a Pressure Differential Alarm (PDA2), an Automatic Timer Flush Package (ATF2-150), or both. The PDA/ATF-MAX-150, powered by Miller-Leaman's proprietary MAXIM controller, monitors differential pressure across the screen and automatically actuates the flush package when the set point is reached.
